Here are the selected artists for our upcoming exhibition, Remix! Out of 300 submissions from all over the country Andrew Rosinski, our juror, selected these 22 artists. This exhibition will include painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, text, new media, and moving image, as well as new and traditional modes of art-making combined in unexpected ways. Art at the Max 2 Artist Talk!

 

On Thursday, June 1, 2017 @ 6:00 PM Join us for an opportunity to hear directly from curator Steve Panton and artists Lynn Bennett-Carpenter, Andy Malone, Billy Mark, David Philpot, and Graem Whyte speak about their featured work in the Art@TheMax II exhibition. The evening will conclude with a guided tour. No prior knowledge of art is necessary. Light refreshments will be served.

Art at the Max II preview

I'm excited to be exhibiting three of my mutoscopes at the Max M. and Majorie S. Fisher Music Center (AKA Orchestra Hall) through mid summer. Thanks to the curator, Steve Panton, for the preview photo.

The Art at the Max II exhibition features great work by Lynne Avadenka, Lynn Bennett-Carpenter, Oren Goldenburg, David Philpot, Tylonn J. Sawyer, Corine Vermeulen and Graem Whyte.

The opening is Thursday April 27 at 6PM. It is free and open to the public.

Artist Talk!

February 9, 6:30 PM at the Anton Art Center

After last year's series of successful talks by Essay'd artists, we are excited to host them again this year at the Anton Art Center!
Kicking off this year's series, Andy Malone will be speaking about his interactive sculptures that often function as games, while conveying deeper themes and making serious topics more approachable. Andy's whimsical machines, board games and drawings have been shown in over thirty exhibitions since 1995, most notably in the Selecti show (2002) at Detroit Artist Market (chosen by Whitney curator Lawrence Rinder). Andy holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy, and has worked in the exhibit and custom furniture industry for over sixteen years.

Essay'd is an online writing project by Dennis Alan Nawrocki, Steve Panton, Matthew Piper and friends, that publishes short, illustrated essays about contemporary Detroit artists on a regular basis. If it continues at its current pace, it will reach 100 artists by early 2018 – an unprecedented survey of Detroit art. The first 30 essays were published in print form by Wayne State University Press in August 2016, and a second volume is scheduled for publication in August 2017.

Mindfield Viaduct Map Project

I had an opportunity to help the good folks from Mindfield with an art installation below a viaduct. Mindfield designed a stylized map of Detroit which represents different modes of transportation. I assisted with design development and fabrication drawings. The project is located on Second Ave between Baltimore and Amsterdam in Detroit. 

Missing Grandma...

So, when my family and I arrived in Grand Rapids, we discovered that all of the frames from one of my pieces were taken! DeVos Place Security and the Grand Rapids Police Dept. were very helpful, but I do not think they will not be recovered. It's a frustrating way to end an otherwise positive experience at Art Prize.

Art Prize 8 top 100

09/28/2016: I found out last night that my piece, Retrospective Loops, is in the top 100 (top 25 for my category) in public voting at Art Prize! I'm under no delusions that it will remain on the "leaderboard" for long (it changes by the hour and there are over 1,400 artists), but for the moment it's pretty cool that my work is connecting with people.

10/03/2016 Quick Update: Retrospective Loops did not make it to the next round, but it was very cool to watch thousands(!) of people interact and appreciate the piece! See the time lapse video below for a typical 90 minutes of Art Prize...and imagine that for 3 weeks.

Essay'd in Print!

The Essay'd: 30 Artists book is beautiful! Much Appreciation to Steve Panton. Dennis Nawrocki, Matthew Piper and Sarah Rose Sharp for their insightful profiles and including my work with such esteemed company. My artwork is not always easy to capture, but Rosie's essay and Riva Sayegh's photos are outstanding!

Paintings Discovered!

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that five paintings created by my Dad (James Hiram Malone) were recently discovered in the archives of the Detroit Children's Museum! According to Museum Curator, Don Bogart, they were displayed at the Detroit Children's Museum in 1969. I was very happy to see them again!
