EXQUISITE CORPSE MACHINE #1

2011

Mixed Media

36” dia x 3” high

The Exquisite Corpse Machine #1 was a proof of concept prototype for collaborative art making device or game. Players make a mark on the card in front of them and rotate the wheel every 5 seconds so another player can continue the drawing. Time was kept with a music box mechanism in the center of the disc. This early version did not yet incorporate the Geneva Wheel mechanism or motors, but it is more scale-able because up to twelve drawings can be in rotation at a time.

I also developed analog collaborative drawing games that could be easily reproduced.

In 2019, I had the privilege of leading a workshop for art educators called "Mechanisms for Collaborative Art Making" at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Together, we explored how embracing play and chance can transform the artistic process, sparking creativity in both teachers and students. I showcased some of my collaborative drawing mechanisms and guided participants through hands-on activities to create paper versions for classroom use. It was exciting to see some of my "playable sculptures" become integrated into elementary school art curriculums, inspiring young artists to collaborate, experiment and unleash their creativity in new ways!
